On 14 January 2009, at around 7:00pm, two missiles landed close to the Abu 'Awwad family home, a four-storey house in Jabalia refugee camp.
The entire family, about 50 people at the time, immediately evacuated the building and walked north. When they were about 50 metres away, 17-year-old Belal went back to make sure there was no one left inside. Shortly after he entered the house a third missile hit the building, which collapsed over him.
His mother, twin brother, and four other siblings survive him. His mother cannot find a new house and lives with a relative.
